Rooted in Reading
At Steve Willshaw Consulting, we believe in the power of reading. Rooted in Reading is a reading for pleasure promotion programme that has been running since 2008. Pupils read a book and then fill in a relevant section of their passport and teachers /librarians can then endorse this using the Rooted in Reading stamp.
Join us on this literary journey and discover how reading can transform your life.
Why Roooted in Reading

-
The project makes reading for pleasure visible in school, giving it kudos and making it easier to talk about.
-
The project is very low cost and easy to administer. There is no complex or time-consuming administration involved and progress is easy to see from the number of entries that pupils have completed.
-
The Rooted in Reading range includes 13 different passports, meeting the needs of children from before they start school right through to the Sixth form.
-
There is also a Teacher’s Passport to encourage the development of whole-school reading communities.
-
The project is supported by a set of Rooted in Reading Principles and two short films in which teachers are joined by Michael Rosen and Morris Gleitzman, the project patron.
-
The project was the subject of a research report and was referenced in the DfE report Research evidence on reading for pleasure (2012) https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a7c18d540f0b61a825d66e9/reading_for_pleasure.pdf
-
Rooted in Reading is pleased to be supported by NATE (the National Association for the Teaching of English) and NAAE (the National Association for Advisers in English) and endorsed by UKLA (the United Kingdom Literacy Association).
