Alongside The Functionally Fluent Teacher, I’ve provided a suite of resources to help you and your pupils map out your "internal theatre".

The Accounting Framework is the "operating system" for this work. When a situation feels like it’s spiralling, we use the Accounting tools to "Get Grounded" and ask: What are the simple facts? What is my emotional state?

Additional free resources:

  • Mode Cards: A dual-coding visual aid for modes like "Nurturing" (accepting, empathic) vs. "Marshmallowing" (smothering, over-tolerant).  The icons make each of the nine modes of behaviour in the Functional Fluency model immediately understandable. Pinned up in a classroom (or at home) this simple document can become an essential aide-memoire, helping pupils to understand the distinction between behaviour which supports teaching and learning and others which undermine it.

  • The Observation Form: A practical way for observers to track the use of the effective "Golden Modes" (Structuring and Nurturing) versus ineffective modes like "Dominating" and "Immature" in the lessons they watch. The focus then becomes all about the relationship between the teacher and the pupils and how they can best work together to create fluent learning conditions.

  • The Teaching and Learning Diagram: Overlaid onto the Functional Fluency model, this diagram captures the fluid, smooth, efficient lines that characterise Functionally Fluent teaching and learning and the longer, jagged and inefficient lines of non-Functionally Fluent teaching and learning. A valuable tool to inform dialogue about how to improve classroom learning.

These aren't just posters; they are the roadmap to becoming Functionally Fluent. All these resources can be downloaded from the book's page on the Hachette website here under the heading Supporting Materials. You can also download a free pdf of Chapter 2: The heart of the Matter here.
